Massage & Physical Therapy

What is physical therapy?

When you suffer a musculoskeletal injury or develop a degenerative disease, physical therapy helps restore optimal health. It’s also prescribed to support recovery from orthopedic surgery.

Many types of passive and active treatments are used during physical therapy in order to:

  • Relieve inflammation
  • Reduce pain
  • Restore balance
  • Boost blood circulation
  • Strengthen muscles, ligaments, and tendons
  • Increase flexibility and range of motion
  • Improve posture and body mechanics

The goal of physical therapy is to give you the strength and functioning you need to get back to your normal activities and help prevent future injuries.

What are the different types of massage?

Massage therapy ranges from the gentle pressure that helps you relax to the deep pressure needed to treat painful muscle knots. A massage can reduce inflammation, increase circulation, relieve pain, and help strengthen your immune system.

There are numerous different types of massage, but four that are frequently performed at Tier Wellness Center are:

Deep tissue massage

This type of massage focuses on specific areas of pain and tension in deep layers of muscles and connective tissues. It’s often used to release adhesions and improve range of motion.

Sports massage

A sports massage is customized for each athlete, using different techniques to meet their needs. This type of massage may be done before, during, and after athletic events to help facilitate recovery, promote peak performance, prevent injuries, relieve fatigue, and reduce swelling.

Acupressure massage

Acupressure massage targets the same key points on the body as acupuncture, but instead of using needles, your massage therapist uses their fingers to apply pressure. This technique restores balance to your natural biological energy and stimulates nerve activity that triggers the release of natural pain-relieving endorphins.

Swedish massage

Swedish massage is often used to relieve stress, but techniques like kneading and percussive tapping also deliver therapeutic benefits by increasing circulation. The boost in blood flow delivers more oxygen and nutrients to muscles while eliminating toxins.

What other techniques are used during physical therapy?

Physical therapists develop a customized treatment for each patient that may include many techniques. These are a few examples:

  • Manual therapy: spine and joint mobilization, Graston technique, myofascial release, active release
  • Exercise therapy: passive and active exercise, movement retraining, functional rehabilitation

The team at Tier Wellness Center uses many other modalities to promote healing and relieve pain, such as the Theragun®. The Theragun delivers rapid, percussive massage that reduces pain and relaxes muscles.
