Extremeties

What does it mean to be a Certified Chiropractic Extremity Practitioner?

Practitioners who have obtained their Doctor of Chiropractic can complete postgraduate training that specializes in the chiropractic treatment of your arms and legs, which includes all of their joints, as well as your feet, hands, and shoulders.

The extensive coursework required to become a CCEP includes learning about orthotics, foot and gait problems, extremity rehabilitation, and advanced techniques in extremity adjusting

What conditions are treated by a CCEP?

Most patients come into Tier Wellness Center with varying degrees of pain and limited movement in their arms, hands, shoulders, legs, or feet.

Although extremity pain may be caused by problems in your spine, many conditions that originate outside the spine can be treated by extremity adjustments and other chiropractic techniques.

A few common extremity problems treated by Dr. Sandahl include:

  • Thoracic outlet syndrome
  • Brachial plexopathy
  • Tennis elbow
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Rotator cuff injury
  • Shin splints
  • Joint injuries
  • Plantar fasciitis

Poor posture and gait problems also contribute to pain in your extremities, so Dr. Sandahl assesses and treats them, if necessary.

When should you see a CCEP for extremity problems?

When symptoms occur in your feet, knees, and legs, it’s especially important to seek timely chiropractic care. Since these structures bear the pressure of your body weight and they perform repetitive movements, musculoskeletal problems can worsen rapidly without treatment.

It’s time to schedule an examination at Tier Wellness Center if you have any of the following symptoms in your extremities:

  • Arm or leg pain
  • Joint pain
  • Stiffness
  • Limited mobility
  • Numbness or tingling
  • Catching or locking in a joint

Don’t wait to seek help if you develop swelling or a fever, or if you can’t use your arm, leg, hand, or foot due to pain or instability, as these could be symptoms of a fracture or infection.

What chiropractic techniques are used during extremity adjustment?

When he examines you, Dr. Sandahl evaluates your whole body, because an injured extremity often causes stress and damage in other parts of your body.

After the cause of your symptoms is determined, Dr. Sandahl develops a customized treatment plan. He may use techniques such as manual joint adjustment, trigger point and myofascial release, and the activator method. If problems are found in your foot, he may prescribe custom orthotics.
